INGREDIENTS
- 1½ pk. split peas
- ham bone, with extra ham
- piece of salt beef, cut up
- diced carrot and turnip (cut small)
- potatoes (about 6) cut into ½ inch pieces
- pepper
- 2 chopped onions
- I used onion powder, and if you are not using salt beef, add salt to taste.
- dumpling ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 tspn. baking powder
- 2 tspn. sugar
- 2 tbsp. margarine
INSTRUCTIONS
- Boil the ham bone, ham, salt beef and peas for about 1 hr.
- Add carrot and turnip and potatoes, and boil for an extra ½ hr.
- If making dumplings, add about 15 minutes after veggies, and cook 15 minutes, without raising cover.
- I prefer to make 1 large dumpling and cut it up after it’s cooked.
- To make dumplings mix all ingredients together and add water to make dough, knead, adding a little flour til it’s no longer sticky
- cut into as many pieces as you want dumplings, rounding the dough and dropping it into the soup
- I recommend cooking everything on medium heat..pea soup likes to stick on and burn on high heat.
